Ramadan 2016 has started, so this is a great time to learn about Islam’s holiest month.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

“Sawm” is the Arabic word for “fasting” (derived from a Syriac term meaning “to abstain”); however, in its religious context, sawm refers specifically to Islamic fasting as prescribed in the Qur’an and the Hadith.

When fasting, Muslims are required to abstain from food, beverages (including water), and sexual intercourse during daylight hours (from dawn to sunset).

Sawm is especially associated with Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims who are physically able and not otherwise exempt (e.g., while traveling or waging jihad) are required to fast from dawn to sunset for the entire month.

Islamic fasting, however, is actually a series of feasts. Most Muslims celebrating Ramadan eat a tremendous amount of food before sunrise and have a feast after sunset. Numerous reports have shown that Muslims consume far more food during Ramadan than during other months. The results are obesity, diabetes, and other health problems.

In this video (“The Truth about Ramadan”), David Wood discusses Ramadan-related health problems and what they teach us about Islam.
